First day without camp

Nick fell out of bed around midnight. I went in to catch him crawling back into bed and he was basically still asleep. Ellie was up first this morning with Nick sleeping in a bit. Ellie said I should check out how he was sleeping, head where his feet should be and pretty much on Ellie's side. Although it was nice and sunny when we woke up it quickly turned to black skies. A huge storm came through with the kind of lightening and thunder that you just know is hitting something.
Mom called and told us they had lost power, again. We called ComEd for them and the automated system informed me that it would most likely be days until they would get their power back. We got dressed and decided to do some science projects. We made snow and rainbow crystals. I picked up this test tube kit a while back at salvation and it had 6 different project in it. We finished and got out of the house. We headed out to possibly start at the Exploritorium but a bunch of other people had that idea so we kept driving.
We went up to Glenview and parked to go into VonMaur but realized there was no power there. We went to Costco and got some fruit and garbage bags and the kids got to sample a few things. We even found that they have a cannoli cake now (we tried it tonight - not as good as Dominos but pretty good for about $8.00). We stopped into HomeGoods and I was able to find matching quilts for the kids beds at the cottage on clearance. Ellie found coordinating throw pillows also on clearance. We picked up a new bed protector for Ellie's new mattress to keep the dust mites out. We also got new pillows for home.
We came home and put groceries away and had lunch. We braved the Exploritorium this afternoon - it wasn't too crowded. Ellie hadn't been since they remodeled. We stayed for over an hour and a half and the kids wore themselves out in the tunnels and slides. We stopped into 7-11 for slurpee day but between the massive power outages and heat they were out but we got small ones anyway.
We came home and Rob came home from work. Ellie helped me prep for dinner - egg salad, berry medley, veggie sticks and corn. Rob took Nick to the pool and Ellie and I went to pottery. I glazed tonight and Ellie made a s'mores plate. It is a small plate and she made mini marshmallows, graham crackers and chocolate bars and then even made skewers.
We came home and had dinner and then Ellie and I read a bit more of her book. The selections for the Battle of the Books are not great (in my opinion). So far, all 3 of the books we have read have some character that had cancer and dies. When I was trying to see what books the library had last week I noticed that the majority are either mystery, ghost or medical (autism, cp, adhd...) why?
