Nick had a not so good night - coughing a bunch and that wakes him up. Rob left this morning and thought he turned off the alarm but it went off at 6:50AM. I wasn't able to keep Nick asleep too much after the alarm. I got the kids their clothes and I took a quick shower. I came down and got the kids breakfast and checked my email. We got Ellie's bag packed for school and her snack packed and she was on her way to the bus. Jules and I texted back and forth for a bit trying to lay down dates for our trip. I called Mom to confirm she was picking us up this morning - she was. Nick and I picked out a toy to take for show and tell at school - it is cartoon character week so he brought his ratatouille toy.
Mom picked us up and then we drove Nick to school. Mom and I did a Target run - I haven't been to Target in almost a month. There was no good clearance - bummer. We stopped into Affy Tapple to pick up some treats for millietime tomorrow night. We had a bit of time left so we went to Constructive Playthings - Mom was able to get some things she needed for St. Patrick's day and some new construction paper. We were early so we got to visit while we waited for school to let out. Mom stopped by our house so I could drop off our milk and pick up something to drink for Nick.
We went to Mom's and had lunch and then Nick wanted to have a movie day - he picked out 101 Dalmatians to start the afternoon out. I can tell he is on the verge of a cold because he was content to sit and just watch movies. After 101 he chose Beauty and Beast - I was able to catch the end before I needed to go pick up Ellie. Mom watched Nick so I could take Ellie up to her session with Trish. I was able to get gas in Lake County for a bit less than it is locally and I was able to do some reading while Ellie and Trish talked.
Ellie and Trish came out at the end and Ellie shared a letter she wrote to me which made me instantly cry. It expressed all the emotions she has felt during my journey. Trish and Ellie also made a family journal - a place where all of us can write down anything we are feeling. We tried to pick up Paczki's at the market on the way home but no such luck. Ellie and I had a nice drive back to Mom's house to pick Nick up.
Nick and Mom were cuddled on the couch - they had an eventful time - making shamrock shakes and playing. We got coats on and headed home. I started making dinner while Ellie did her timeline homework. Nick was sort of in meltdown mode. We had dinner and then got vitamins and got ready for bed. Unfortunately, I give Nick his inhalers right before bed, which speeds up his heart and makes him a bit jumpy - makes for a long bedtime.
After the kids were asleep, I started going through our book of pictures to look for photos to go with Ellie's timeline. Rob and I had some good laughs - Ellie really looked like she might explode during her first 18 months of life. We found pictures of our house when we first bought it before we remodeled it. We found pictures of Rob's 80s clothing collection - fun times. I ended up having to go downstairs to look through the drive on the computer - I think I found a picture for all her events. I got a call from Ellie's friend Catherine accepting our invite to Ellie's party and I got to talk to Christi for a couple minutes - they were going through pictures too. We lamented about the digital age - you can't just go through a box of photos - you have to go through multiple computer folders trying to find what you are looking for.
My hands have been hyper sensitive today - I was able to not wear gloves outside but as soon as my fingers met metal I almost had a burning sensation. I officially have no finger prints now - crime spree? My feet haven't been bad except they don't seem to be able to warm up. My mouth didn't really bother me today - woohoo. I have noticed that more brown spots are cropping up - it is one of the side effects of the 5-fu - they look like age spots but over time (months) will fade away - I wonder if all the new freckles on my face will fade? Happy Monday
The kids were up way too early this morning - 6:45AM. We had breakfast and just had a slower morning. I got a call back from my friend, Jen, at the hospital. Jen reassured me that Scarlett would self heal - that it would be similar to a balloon popping. Put me so at ease knowing I didn't need to have her repaired. We did end up going to Michaels but chemo brain kicked in and we never ended up looking for what we went there for. We did pick up wooden birdhouses for the kids to paint when we need a project one day.
Ellie joined Rob at school today - they had lunch together and then Rob had arranged for Ellie to sit in on a few art classes. I think she had a fun time. Nick and I went over to Mom's for lunch and to play. We ended up watching Little Women (the Winona Ryder version) and Nick was into it for about the first 45 minutes. Mom and I changed Scarlett and sure enough, Mom couldn't see any additional openings on Scarlett. She is still in her un-happy state and needed to be built up so the breakdown doesn't worsen. Nick and I went home and Rob and Ellie had just gotten home.
Rob and I were able to catch up a bit while the kids played. Ellie did some thinking about a school project that is due this week - they will be creating a life timeline so she needed to think about their major life events. Nick and Rob did some more disassembling of our cabinet in the basement so we can get working on the new one. I got Nick ready for his bath - he got to pick out a new bubble bath to use. Ellie and I went to pottery class.
Ellie's pieces from last week were fired and I have to say I love her patchwork vase - so cute. Ellie worked on a giant cupcake covered bowl tonight and I worked on an over sized tile. We picked up dinner on our way home and everyone must have been hungry because it was pretty quiet while we all ate. Nick was doing blueberry shooters - he would fill his mini bowl with blueberries and just toss them back like a shot. We did vitamins and medicines - Ellie has a cold and Nick has the worst chapped skin under his bottom lip - and then we went up and brushed teeth and washed faces. Both kids were asleep in record time - this is another sign they aren't feeling well.
I made the invitations for Ellie's party - she decided on a cooking party so we will be making pizzas, cupcakes, chocolate dipping some stuff and then the kids can make their own recipe books - it should be fun. Rob went up to bed early and here I sit watching Conan and blogging. Things seem to be a bit better today in the neuropathy department - hands and feet not so bad and my mouth doesn't seem to be so bad either. I did start coating my feet in shea butter and then putting on warm socks and I think the moisture is helping my feet. Visualising my healthy and continually healing body and the new normal, Tree

Happy 12th Anniversary to us
12 years ago today, on a very snowy day, Rob and I got married. In all regards, in the last 9 months we have had to face so incredibly challenging times but we have plowed through and come out stronger. I am looking forward to year 12 and how perfectly timed with the new normal.
I obviously had some adrenaline issues last night and really didn't calm down until a good 4 hours after my Scarlett leak discovery. Rob went up to bed around 11PM but I didn't go up until about 3AM. Thankfully, when I woke up this morning - Scarlett was not leaking through the wafer so I am hoping between the barrier build up and the wax the leak somehow plugged or repaired itself. I tried to google it last night but I ended up only finding two similar scenarios - one man in London (his doctor told him not to worry about it) and a lady in the US (who ended up with 6 ulcers around her stoma).
We all got dressed for church and were on our way - the roads were much better today. After church we went to the pancake breakfast and got to visit with some friends for a bit while the kids played basketball and then moved onto scooters. We came home and just relaxed for a bit - Ellie worked on mardi gras masks, a project that presented some challenges and took her some time to master. Nick had Rob make 2 cardboard boxes into car garages and then drove numerous cars and trucks in and out. We worked our way into a dance party and we turned up the music and we all danced in the living room together.
Rob and I discussed spring break plans - as much as we would love to go to disney - I really don't feel like air travel until I don't have to provide a id card for Plum. We though about going to St. Louis again (the kids are still talking about the trip from last year) but then we thought of a better idea - Louisville. All the things we can do on our way there and the added bonus of spending some girl time with Julie.
We headed off to Mom and Dad's house for family Sunday. Mom took all food requests and honored them - chicken from Chicken Inn, pierogi for Ellie, corn pudding for Nick, cole slaw and sauteed cabbage, a great fruit salad and home made bread. It was wonderful to celebrate March madness (anniversary, Ellie and Nick's b-days, mardi gras, st. pat's day, st. jospehs day). We had a very nice dinner together and then onto the wonderful desserts - cannoli and chocolate pudding frosted angel food cake.
We stayed a bit later because the kids are off from school tomorrow and got to visit a bit longer. We came home and got the kids in their PJs and they watched an Arthur episode while Rob and I discussed spring break a bit more. We shared our idea with the kids and they are excited. Rob wants to see the Slugger factory and he didn't say it but I know he is happy to do that with his little boy (and girl). We got the kiddos to bed and we've been watching Sunday night tv.
When I took a shower today, I was washing my feet and as I slid the soap over the bottom of my foot a huge piece of skin just came off. I am have to be honest, as disgusting as it is for my skin to be just peeling off - I am oddly fascinated at the same time. I took about 10 minutes after my shower to peel off all the skin that was actively peeling - so far just the ball of my feet and toes. My hands aren't so tingly today but the pain continues and they look gross. My teeth and gums are about the same. Visualising my healthy and continually healing body and the new normal, Tree

TMI post
Backwards post today because I need to vent about what just happened but a warning that it is totally gross. Sometime this afternoon, Nick was sitting with me on the couch and then did some weird move and landed on Scarlett - there was a pop noise. I checked things out when I went to the washroom but things looked to be fine and I wasn't sure what the noise was. Flash forward about 6 hours - I get up from the couch and I am just dripping wet - not with sweat. I am not sure if it was Nick's jumping move or my lack of discipline (I ate popcorn today - an ostomy no no) or something else but Scarlett has a tear. It is tiny and on the underneath side but definitely doesn't belong there. I called Mom and talked my plan through with her because calling my surgeon at 9:30PM on a Saturday night I don't think was going to get me where I needed to be. I also don't want to go the the ER because I don't think they are the best option to fix my problem - after all, I don't want anymore scars.
Rob helped me as I built up layers of powder and sealant and then helped center a new wafer - I guess I will just see in the morning what is happening and I will put a call into Dr. Muldoon - I really don't want to have to have anything done so close to the reversal of Scarlett. I am frustrated with this because of the disgusting factor and because I want the new me not some defected me.
Now I will rewind - we were all up relatively early. We did some laundry and had breakfast and then we got dressed. We went to see Rango today - we got there early and were glad we did because it was a packed theatre by the time the movie began. The popcorn smelled so good I just was overcome by the desire to eat it - might have been a contributing factor in the tear - I hope not because I can just hear the lecture I might get. The movie was funny for both the kids and the adults but was a bit on the violent end.
We came home after the movie and the kids played games for a bit and then Nick came to cuddle by me and Rob and Ellie ran out to the store. It was during this cuddling episode that the pop came into play. I played wii cooking wars with Ellie while Rob and Nick played in the workshop. I fixed Ellie a nice bubble bath while Rob and Nick streamed Wallace & Grommit. I had made plans with Mom to go to Big Lots tonight - she had 20% off. Mom and Dad came to pick me up around 6PM and I had dinner ready to go into the oven for Rob and the kids.
We did our Big Lots run and then worked our way carefully back home -picking up pizza along the way. Rob was putting the kiddos to bed when I got home so I fixed myself some pizza and tea and went to hang out in the back room. All was fine until I got up and knew something was wrong. Agggh - frustrated still.
My hands are terrible - they are cracking and peeling and uncomfortable. My feet are all sorts of tingly and I am just making it a point not to look at them. My mouth and gums are so gross - I still haven't tried my magic mouth wash - there are just so many limitations I can handle at one time. I can't eat or drink for an hour after gargling with the wash - so it involves planning. Scarlett, in addition to the tear, is all sorts of unhappy and is very broken down and bloody. I am so happy to be done with chemo but the after-effects of this last infusion majorly suck. Strongly visualising my healthy and continually healing body and the new normal - hopefully appearing sooner than later, Tree

Maybe next week
Had a good nights sleep lazy night and because of the rain and overcast nature of this morning - Nick slept in. My sleep coma that usually encompasses my Fridays started last night and continued today. I got the kids breakfast and crashed on the living room couch as they watched some morning tv.
Mom and I compared notes and she was going to pick us up around 11AM to go grocery shopping. I started the shower for Ellie and then got Nick into his bath - clean kids! We got dressed and waited for Mom.
The kids were happy to watch the end of Thomas Magic Railroad. Mom and I were able to visit. It took all of me not to fall asleep during the ride out. I have been on a nausea wave run today. I had cut my hand slicing a bagel this morning - Ellie helped me bandage it up - glad the platelet count was up this week. We started at Michaels - we were looking for nothing in particular but ended up with two bags of nothing in particular.
We went to Garden Fresh afterwards - I just wasn't feeling so hot. The kids got to help pick some special menu items of for Family Sunday and we reached the check out just in time. Mom and Ellie ran into the dollar store while Nick and I stayed int he car watching the dvd.
We stopped by our house to unload our grocery bags and pick up Scarlett supplies before going to Mom's to unload her groceries and eat lunch. We got the bags in and Ellie helped Mom unload and put away. I kind of felt like I could pass out but we changed Scarlett out first. She is partially happy and unhappy. Mom made me a grilled cheese and I couldn't get enough blankets on me to warm me up. I ate my grilled cheese and made myself one with the couch. Mom watched the kiddos so I could sleep.
I woke up around 5PM and they were working organizing the playroom. We stayed for a bit longer but when the rain died down we ran to the car to go home. Rob was home when we got here and we visited for a bit before deciding to have family game night. We did pizza palace and put a few puzzles together. We got the kids their medicine and vitamins and then off to bed it was.
I have been trying to warm up again - I have layers on and gloves. My teeth/gums have begun to hurt again so magic mouth wash will get its trial run tomorrow. I can't even put into words how painful my hands are today - so beyond tinglies, the joint of each finger is painful and some are really peeling. Plus I added a knife wound to the list today. My feet hurt - I am glad I don't have any long distance walking to do right now. So I am thinking next week is a better goal for the coming soon of the new normal me because I am feeling a bit bitchy and sick this week and that is not who I want to be. Treatable and beatable - why yes it is
I should have wrote this before I went into my sleep coma - I told Rob I was closing my eyes for a bit around 9PM and I just woke up and its 11:15PM. Ellie was up super early because Nick and I were up early and she was already dressed and downstairs. Nick and I got dressed and joined her. I got Nick a yogurt and put on some water for tea. We got Ellie packed up for school - she was bringing a tub of cookies with for school party today.
While getting Ellie ready for the bus, Nick was yelling he needed more food. Ellie got off to the bus and I made Nick a bagel with cream cheese. I gave Mom a call to let her know my plans and then Nick and I were on the way to school. I dropped Nick and then went over to Mom's house to play with T for a bit. We had a fun little bit without Nick there and then I helped Mom get Tony bundled and into the car and loaded nick's booster seat - Mom was picking up Nick while I went for my last disconnect.
My pump emptied ultra fast this time - it is heat sensitive so I guess I must have been running hot the last 2 days. It was empty when I woke up this morning and it usually has 3 more meter marks to go. Grace was doing my disconnect but I got to say hi and hooray to Sally, Deb, Janet, Margaret and Lori. Grace told me how sensitive my skin is - I think this has been a new development over the last 5 months. We did my disconnect and I got my last neulasta shot and I was on my way out, doing a happy dance to the car.
I picked up lunch on the way back to Mom's and we all had a nice lunch on the porch. I did get the best hug ever from Nick when I arrived home and Mom announced I was all done with the pump and needle forever. He ran up to me and asked if I could hold him again and I said yes. It brought very painful tears to my eyes. Somehow the nerves involved in tear production are extremely painful during chemo week - I physically have to place pressure on my entire eye if i tear up. The boys played with the kitchen for a bit but then we went in in hope of having family nap time to Bambi - didn't happen.
Nick and I came home to get Ellie and to give Tony some time to nap. Nick was very happy to show Ellie all his stuff from circus week at school. They played nice for a while, nice enough I was able to run up and take a shower. My feet were beyond cold and I couldn't warm them up but I thought the shower might do the trick and it did. I couldn't get all the adhesive off from the dressing because when I attempted to help it off with my nail I was peeling up a layer of skin - maybe I will try rubbing alcohol tomorrow. When I was putting on my socks I noticed the skin on my other big toe and other toes shedding off in sheets. What I know from this past summer is they will shed off in layers - toes not so bad but when it gets to the bottom of my feet the layers come off before the new skin is ready.
Rob called and was stuck at school for a while so we waited for him to go back to Mom's - we were celebrating Last Chemo Day and the end of Ellie's isats. Ellie helped me make some cookies for dessert. We left for Mom's when Rob got home. Ellie loved the new kitchen and immediately went to play. Dad brought home dinner from West of Edens and Jo, Ole and T stayed for dinner to celebrate. Mom made a huge sign - that will be a pic for my post tomorrow. It is great to be done - it was freeing not to have to take my oh so fashionable fanny pack with me when I left today.
The picture today is my beloved pump. You can kind of see that there is a inflated balloon inside. When I got the pump on Tuesday it was loaded with approximately 46 hours of 5-FU which is delivered via Plum and I would have a heat sensor taped to my chest to ensure timely delivery. I would carry the pump in a very fashionable blue fanny pack. Today, I feel like my throat is closing - a bit swollen. My hands and feet are extremely sensitive and my hands are actually painful. I have had a on/off headache and then the minor aches that come with the neulasta shot. Even with the claritin the actual shot is painful and causes my arm to hurt for the first couple hours.
I am ready for life to resume again - let March madness begin - our 12th anniversary, Ellie and Nick's birthdays and no more doctor visits. Visualising my healthy and continually healing body and the new normal - grand opening 3/3/11, Tree

Wacky Wednesday
Chemo brain - I know I was down on the couch for a bit last night because the steroids kicked in and I was up. This morning we got dressed and went down for breakfast. I fixed Ellie some eggs and Nick a bagel. Ellie was way less nervous this morning and was already practicing her breathing at breakfast. Ellie packed some snacks for today and was on her way to the bus.
Nick and I got ready for preschool - it is circus week and he has been excited. Christi and I had pans to get together for coffee time this morning. So wonderful catching up for a bit before I got a call from Mom who had received a call from school that Nick had an accident and needed a change of clothes brought over. So, our visit was cut short but still great to visit for a bit - it had been too long.
I stopped home and picked up clothes for Nick and then went to school to change him. He was waiting for me eating his snack and wanted to leave with me but I convinced him he wanted to stay. I had about 30 minutes until I had to be back to pick him up so I ran over to Tuesday Morning and Half Price Books - found a couple things. I went back to pick up Nick and he was happy he stayed - they had showed the kids some string tricks and played with balloons.
We went over to Mom's house to play with Tony and have some lunch. The boys played with the new kitchen and had their drinks at the table. Mom and I changed Scarlett out - on the verge of being un-happy. Mom and I fixed lunch for all of us - the boys ate lunch while watching Busy Town - a new dvd from Half Price Books. I fell asleep in the glider after lunch and Mom took the boys out the porch to play. I woke up in time to pack up and get Ellie from the bus.
Ellie said she had a good testing day and tomorrow they get to have an impromptu party to relieve the testing tension. The kids played with the big cardboard box until Rob came home and then they went downstairs and I fell asleep on the couch. I woke up in time to make dinner - Ellie was my helped because my hands are super sensitive today. Ellie washed and cut up the fruit and then got the food out of the freezer for me. We had pizza and bbq chicken strips, fruit salad and veggies for dinner. The kids ate their taffy apples for dessert and then we went up to bed. Rob started with Ellie and I with Nick and then we switched so I could chill out of the couch.
I am a bit nauseated right now - just took an ativan so hopefully the wave will pass soon. I have taken a couple pictures to share on the next few blogs - the one tonight is of me with my friend - the IV pump. My hands and feet have begun to shed - my hands never did this before and the skin on the bottom of my entire big toe peeled off today. On the bright side my mouth and gums aren't hurting do badly. Visualising my healthy and continually healing body and the new normal - coming soon, Tree
